Additional info: From "MUNDUS SUBTERRANEUS." Athanasius Kircher (1602-80) was a German Jesuit scientist who travalled widely before setting in Rome. There he founded the Museo Kitcheriano in the Collegio Romano. Amongst his many published works is this one describing the world`s ocean current, tides, volcanic distribution, and the core structure of the planet. This map, along with others in the two volume work, illustrates for the first time the ocean`s currents. North America bears no detail beyond the naming of California, and the lakes of Mexico City which are locatdes too far north. A huge crater lake dominates Souht America near the headwaters of the Amazon River. There were two later editios, one in 1668, and another in 1678.
